The Superest Super-Something Ever

Superest

The Superest is a continually running game of My Team, Your Team. The rules are simple: Player 1 draws a character with a power. Player 2 then draws a character whose power cancels the power of that previous character. Repeat.”

Silliness abounds from Kevin Cornell & Matthew Sutter.

Briefs – Episode One

Briefs - Episode One

Check out the debut episode of Briefs, an online animated series about the ins, outs, perils, foibles, quirks, cliches, idiosyncrasies, truths, lies, and graphic violence of the advertising world.

To quote one advertising Blogger:

“…it may be offensive to some in our business since [Briefs] pokes fun at advertising stereotypes like excessive drinking, creative directors that don’t work, internships that last forever for no pay … there is a bit of cartoon gore, men in tighty-whiteys and mistreatment of both interns and account executives.”

If this sounds like something up your alley, go take a peek… but beware, the above part about men in tighty-whities is true.

Absolute scads of episodes are in production and coming soon!

Simpsons and Futurama Make Good Anime (As Does Calvin and Hobbes!)

UPDATE: This article has been moved to 1over100.com

If you haven’t seen the work of Space Coyote yet, you probably will soon. The anime renditions of the entire Simpsons clan have started opening a few doors. These are essentially reverse caricatures, or re-caricatures, pulling the main identifying features from one genre to another. Space Coyote is very good at this, and continues to draw Matt Groening characters, as well as other well known and stylistic cartoon icons like Calvin and Hobbes.

Uptight All Night with Jordan Crane

Uptight

Jordan Crane is a ridiculously amazing illustrator. He’s recently released a book of postcards called “Uptight All Night” and it is remarkable. Totally. The angst, wonder and complexity of his drawings are super.

It’s only USD10 for 30 little pieces of diamond. I’ve just bought a copy and your friends and empty walls will thank you later.

The Simpsons Movie Personal Avatars

UPDATE: This article has been moved to 1over100.com

Simpsons jtedIf Matt Groening met Jason Theodor, this could be the result: a geeky Simpsons character, wearing a Ze Frank T-Shirt. You can log in and make your own from a limited array of choices (not unlike creating a Nintendo Mii), then save them and print them. Toysrevil has made a Simpsons Avatar flickr group to share your cartoon creations. My guess is you’ll be able to embed them on MySpace soon (since they are both Fox properties). I had to take a screenshot to upload this to my facebook profile, but I’m not holding my breath for a NewsCorp facebook app. This is a fabulous way to waste a ton of time, and build buzz for the upcoming Simpsons Movie.

WikiWorld: The Illustrated Wikipedia

Greg Williams is a cartoonist who is working on a project called WikiWorld, a weekly comic that highlights the obscure reaches of Wikipedia. He just finished this wonderful illustration of John Hodgman (see related 1% article, Free “Areas of My Expertise” at iTunes Canada).

Chris Ware Gets Animated For This American Life

This American Life

I’m a huge fan of Jonathan Goldstein’s WireTap series which airs on the CBC. Johnathan also writes and records for the NPR in the US, on a program called This American Life, hosted by Ira Glass. Recently, and yes, this is going somewhere, Ira brought his quirky true stories to television, with the help of Showtime. In episode 5 of season 1, there is a short piece called Cameraman which features the animated illustrations of cartoonist and graphic novelist Chris Ware.

Cameraman

A disturbing, animated short from acclaimed cartoonist Chris Ware about the perils of watching life from a distance. Also, a documentary that started as a lark and became an exercise in learning that getting behind a camera can change not just what you see, but also who you are. Debuts April 12, 2007

Bawidamann – Pinup Artist

UPDATE: This article has been moved to 1over100.com

Army Ranger

Andrew Bawidamann has made the 40’s pinup his own. Lots of slick renderings of army gals packing heat make for an interesting couple of minutes cheescake. If you collect gig posters, check out his collection.

Rorshach Test Image Spotted in 300 Trailer

Rorshach Test Image
Someone on YouTube discovered that exactly 1 minute and 52 seconds into the latest 300 trailer, there was a test image of Rorshach, from the upcoming Zach Snyder movie, Watchmen. Of course, Warner demanded that YouTube remove the copyright-protected material, but here is a picture of what was shown: Rarshach on the moonlit streets of NYC, holding the bloody happyface pin of the Comedian. Thanks to Simon for this little tip.
