Flipping the Funnel: The Latest (Fre)eBook from Seth Godin

Flipping the FunnelThat marketing guy with the bald head has released a short, free ebook called Flipping the Funnel. His name is Seth Godin, and he’s written a million quirky marketing books including: Unleashing the Idea Virus, Purple Cow, FREE PRIZE INSIDE, and All Marketers are Liers to name a few. Here’s a quick quote to tell you what the 18 pages are about:

Turn strangers into friends.
Turn friends into customers.
And then… do the most important job:
Turn your customers into salespeople.

He talks about Del.icio.us and blogging and Flickr and Thai food, and other cool stuff. If you don’t download the PDF and spend 10 minutes reading it, than at least skim this last bit:

I don’t think most marketers have a clue how word of mouth can help them. They think they need to use word of mouth, to manipulate it, to pay for it and put it to work.

I may be in the minority, but I think it’s a lot more organic than that. I think consumers of all kinds are too smart. They’re not going to get fooled into shilling for a company that manipulates them into it. When the megaphone becomes a shortsighted corporate initiative, it’s gotta fail.

The alternative lies in being authentic. In creating products that are genuinely worth talking about. In going out of your way to invest in experiences that people choose to share. Then, yes, by all means, make the tools available. Amplify the happiest fans. But without the kernel of truth, you’ve got nothing but a short-lived packaged-goods campaign.

Alright – one more time

This is what I really do on the information superhighway.

Take your Honda Element for a ride

ElementI like the Element; I think it’s a fly ride. Yet when Honda first launched it, there really wasn’t much noise about it. I think this site is finally doing the car some justice. Just visit the island and take the Element for a ride. Or I pinch. Thanks Baker!

Proportional Representation of the News

Newsmap!

Newsmap turns the ordinary Google News site into a beautiful visual representation of how much press any given story is receiving. Sections (such as National or Entertainment) are colour coded. There are tabs to view the news in different countries, and to make comparisons of coverage. All in all, this is a stunning way to scan the headlines and to absorb media trends. Well worth visiting often.

What I do on the information superhighway

As you all know I’m still pretty web illiterate – ironic I know. There is however one simple thing I do at least 7 times a day – no, it’s not checking email – it’s checkin’ out my m.c.

See for yourself. You may in fact be more famous, wanted, loathed or loved than you think.

1 Page per Day = 1 Book per Year

TOM JUDD'S EVERYDAY

365 PAGES AGO I HAD A VERY SILLY IDEA. Draw a page everyday for one year. Each day I spent around 1 hour on the page, sometimes more, sometimes less. There was never any planning or preparation, I would just go at it whenever I had a spare moment in my day and had something I needed to write or draw. Some of the drawings are observational and some are just plain weird. Monsters and things seem to crop up a lot (robots too). I have no explanation for this and don’t really care because its my book and I drew what ever I wanted on that particular day. Anyway, all 365 pages are on this site so feel free to have a good poke around. Let me know what you think and feel free to ask any questions. I’m going to sleep for a bit. Bye now – Tom Judd
