Which column do you choose?

During a climate change course at U of T (around ’91) we had to write an essay saying either we thought the cost of dealing with climate change was either the right or the wrong thing to do.

I argued the question was irrelevant even if there was a chance that the bottom right column was a potential…

The prof in question tired to give me a “C” for not answering the question until i argued partially my way back up to a B+. And he was the president of the sierra club for goodness sake.

    Great video Jted, thanks.

The “reasoning” in this video is EXTREMELY flawed. First of all, he intentionally over-inflates the dangers in Column B, while discounting gains in Column A. As a restul, people (who are risk-adverse by nature) will be drawn to Column B since the risk of losing outweighs what appears to be no gains.

In reality, however, Column B must be weighed against Column A. Thus, the question is – “Is the risk in Column B worth the gain over Column A.” I.e. – is it worth risking doing nothing to avoid a major world recession. [Of course note that a recession is a foregone conclusion in his calculation.]

Moreover, he never explains what potential gains are in general. This makes people fearful and irrational. For example, by simply moving the baseline of what can happen, you reach a far different conclusion. For example, you could say “we solve poverty and live in utopia by doing nothing and being right” vs. “worldwide recession and poverty by acting – no matte whether climate change is real or not.” Under that scenario, why not take a chance? Your only two outcomes are utopia or terrible recession. It’s a free lottery ticket so you’d always choose to not act.

Needless to say, this is what happens when you let people who have no economic sense post videos for people to watch without critically examining them.
